Fire in the Bosque 5/4/06

On Thursday May 4, 2006, central New Mexico experienced one of nature's most frightening events... an uncontrolled wild fire burning in the bosque along the Rio Grande River. Most New Mexico TV stations featured at most 1 or 2 minutes of coverage of this rare event on their evening news. However, an alert Steppin Out reporter who happened to have both his digital camera and video cam in his car at the time diverted from another project and captured an amazing 33 minute block of video which he promptly brought straight to us.
We then removed the least interesting and most disturbing parts -- burning ranches wasn't what we wanted to show -- and added background music to the video to mask out the sound of the constantly howling desert winds. In the end we produced this -- admittedly jumpy -- 8 minute video of the rare and terrifying event of an uncontrolled wild fire burning along the Rio Grande River in some of New Mexico's most fertile farm and pasture land. Sorry about the jumpiness. Our reporter hadn't expected to be climbing hills with all his equipment and didn't have the right tripod or even proper shoes for the work he ended up doing.
