<img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/fun-fly-day-kite.jpg border=1 align=right vspace=5 hspace=8 alt="Handmade Kites were the theme for AWE's Fun-Fly Day!">Deming NM: Down in southwestern New Mexico between Columbus and Deming on highway 11, Art on the Western Edge Gallery - aka AWE - (www.awe88029.com (http://www.awe88029.com/)) will host a Greeting Card making workshop on the afternoon of April 12th at 1:30pm. The workshop is titled, "Making Mabel's Famous Toilet Paper Cards".
The card-making seminar offers fun and entertainment plus a chance to learn a new art skill for just $20 per attendee. The fee includes the cost of supplies and refreshments and you can take the cards you make home too.
This AWE-sponsored workshop is a perfect chance for moms and kids to work together on unforgettable mother's day gifts for their Grandmas, for troup leaders to learn a skill they can teach their scouts (there must be a merit badge in there somewhere!), for artists to expand their creative reportoire, or for art instructors to add to their list of of fun and easily-taught craft projects.
<img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/rc-1.jpg border=1 align=left vspace=5 hspace=8 alt="Planes flown by leprecauns were popular on Fun-Fly Day!">Mabel's Toilet Paper Card-making workshop is just one of many interesting arts and tourism-related events AWE has sponsored and hosted over the past two years. In January the Deming Writing Club held its fourth anniversary party at AWE. In February, Larry R. Miller presented a class titled “How to Get Published---How to Get Paid.” which focused primarily on free-lance writing in the Internet world. And in March, AWE hosted their first ‘FUN-FLY DAY”. which focused on how to build, fly and display kites. In keeping with the event's flying theme, model airplanes were also on display. The fun included a radio controlled model plane flying show… PLUS ultra-lights and regular planes flew in and were on display. The event was a great success and everyone had fun. Most of the photos accompanying this story were taken on 'Fun-Fly Day'.
AWE also has a delightful bed and breakfast onsite that offers comfy rooms and delicious bountiful breakfasts and can easily accommodate several guests. That makes it particularly handy for those who fly or drive-in from distant places and plan to spend a day or two exploring the historic communities of Columbus, Palomas Mexico, and Deming.
<img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/ultralight-at-wwbb.jpg border=1 align=right vspace=5 hspace=8 alt="Even ultra-light aircraft were present at AWE's Fun-Fly Day!">Asked about their proximity to the border, AWE owner Jeri-Sue Heath laughs and insists Pancho Villa did NOT sleep at AWE the night before his Columbus attack. "None of these buildings were here then," she smiles. "Besides, we're miles north of the border and Villa's attack came from the south." Then she added, "I wish we could claim 'Villa Slept Here'... It might increase our business!"
<img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/rc2.jpg border=1 align=left vspace=5 hspace=8 alt="There was lots to see and do on Fun-Fly Day!">In addition to being Southern New Mexico's only papercrete art gallery (but you'll swear it's an old adobe!), and hosting an ongoing series of art exhibits and events, AWE is also the state's only Fly-in/Drive-in Art Gallery. Their 2500 foot runway ends just a few yards from the Gallery's front door. Small plane tie-downs and a private hanger are less than 100 feet away.
AWE invites interested artists, crafters local folk and tourists to come out and be creative or just get crazy...$20 gets you an afternoon of fun, refreshments, learning, new friends and results to take home.
If you are driving to AWE, follow highway 11 south from Deming toward Columbus and take the first right after mile marker 7 onto Lauturner Rd. Head west approximately 3/4 mile, then turn right and go north to the hangar. See AWE’s fly-in drive page for a map and other details at: <HTTP: www.awe88029.com about2.html>Map to Awe (http://www.awe88029.com/about2.html)
