Alamogordo, NM - Okay, so we exagerated a little and our imagery for this story doesn't quite match the reality. The New Mexico Space Museum isn't really planning to let your kid fly the shuttle -- at least not this summer; but a new flight training program actually has been added to the curriculum for the New Mexico Museum of Space History’s popular Shuttle Camp this summer. Shuttle Camp is the museum’s week-long summer science education camp for children in grades K-12. Registration is currently open for the camp. Parents are encouraged to sign their children up quickly as classes are filling fast.

The training equipment includes the F-117 Egress Trainer and the X-40A Control Cockpit. The F-117 Egress Trainer is a full-scale F-117 cockpit used to train pilots on how to exit the aircraft in case of an emergency. The X-40A Control Cockpit was used to operate the X-40A Space Maneuver Vehicle "approach and landing" craft. The cockpit was a "virtual presence training mock-up for potential man-rated capability for the X-40A. The cockpit was a training simulator made to connect to a control trailer and give immediate flight simulation feedback." Both of these cockpits are on loan from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force until April 30, 2009.

“We’re very appreciative to our friends at Holloman Air Force Base and Kirtland Air Force Base for assisting us with these loans. We will have both trainers up and ready to run when Shuttle Camp begins the first week of June. Our cadets will be the first to take advantage of this exciting new program,” said Museum Division Director Randall Hayes.

The Daisy Track Exhibit Building at the New Mexico Museum of Space History is now closed temporarily for the installation of the museum’s new flight training equipment.
