WHAT: Celebracíon de Otoño: 3rd Anniversary Celebration

El Camino Real International Heritage Center will have its 3rd Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Saturday, November 15th, 9:30 am – 4 pm. On-going activities during the day will include horno-baking demonstrations and cornhusk doll making courtesy of El Rancho de Las Golondrinas Living History Museum, living history reenactments of Spanish Colonial life by La Sociedad de la Entrada, sewing by New Mexico Farm and Ranch, and mule packing demonstrations courtesy of Back Country Horsemen of America. The event will feature slide-show lectures and presentations about El Camino Real by Mr. Bennie Barreras, Mr. Paul Harden, Mr. Tom Harper and archeologist Mike Marshall. There will also be a Chautauqua performance by VanAnn Moore courtesy of the New Mexico Humanities Council.

The event will begin at 9:30 am with a special talk on the people and heritage of El Camino Real by long-time Socorro resident, Mr. Bennie Barreras. Born in 1925 in the community of San Marcial, Mr. Barreras will recollect his family’s memories of life along El Camino Real while telling the histories of the various communities that once existed along the old trail leading north into Socorro. Having served as a county commissioner, Mr. Barreras has also been a member of the Socorro City Council, Socorro Electric Co-Op, and the Socorro County school board. Mr. Barreras served as an appointee by Governor Bill Richardson to the Region 7 Housing Authority’s Board of Directors. Currently, Mr. Barreras serves on Board of Directors to El Camino Real International Heritage Center Foundation. Mr. Barreras’ talk will also include his involvement with the planning for the development of El Camino Real International Heritage Center.

At 11 am archeologist Mike Marshall will present a slide-show lecture on El Camino Real. This presentation will focus on the famous Jornada del Muerto section of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. The Jornada del Muerto is one of three jornadas (long tracts which required forced marches) along the Camino Real between Chihuahua City and Santa Fe. This lecture will explore the use of the Jornada del Muerto as identified in historic documents and archeological records.

A slide-show lecture by Paul Harden at 12:30 pm will answer the question most commonly asked by visitors: Where’s the trail? The disappearing trail cannot directly be seen from the Center. However, there are remnants of the trail still visible from Dona Ana into Santa Fe. This includes areas just east of the Center along the Jornada del Muerto, across the river from Socorro, and the west branch of the Camino Real through Fort Craig. Harden explores these sections of the trail with historic and modern day photos and maps of the trail, major landmarks along El Camino Real, wagons in use, and other information on travel along the historic trail over the centuries.

Ms. VanAnn Moore will present A Journey of the Heart: A Southern Belle in the Old West at 2 pm. The performance tells the life story of Mary (Mamie) Bier Bernard Aguirre (1844-1906). Mamie Aguirre grew up in a wealthy home in Westport, Missouri, and was sent to a ladies finishing school in Maryland just before the Civil War. She was sixteen years old when the War brought an end to her family's lifestyle. She married a handsome Mexican freighter and embarked upon a journey to New Mexico, meeting with adventure and terror along the way. Left a widow with three young children, she became a teacher in an old adobe school and, in 1896, became the first woman professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Her life of extraordinary courage and talent will thrill audiences of all ages. The story of Mamie has recently been published in "Journey of the Heart" by Annette Gray. VanAnn Moore is a Chautauqua performer and researcher who has brought a dozen historical characters alive for the New Mexico Humanities Council for over 14 years. She has performed internationally.

The event will conclude with a presentation by Tom Harper, Aerial Photography of El Camino Real, at 3:30 pm. Over the last 6 years Harper has worked with camera equipped, radio controlled model airplanes to discover and survey the swales and trails of El Camino Real near Socorro. His lecture will share the results of his project using low altitude small scale reconnaissance.

Educational programs and activities are made possible by El Camino Real IHC Foundation and Museums of New Mexico Foundation.
