Socorro, N.M. – Two exhibits in Socorro this month illustrate the quality of artists being attracted to the region. The two artists come from different ends of the continent and view their art in different ways.
Joel Smith is exhibiting some of his recent landscapes at the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce office, 101 Plaza. A relative newcomer to the desert southwest, Joel Smith brings with him an impressive background in American abstract art and instruction. His work is in collections from the Museum of Modern Art, New York and Tate Gallery, London; to Tokyo, Switzerland, Toronto and around the United States.
After retiring from teaching, the artist moved to Socorro, turned a double-car garage into his studio and began exploring the region. His considerable energy is reflected in his exhibit at the Chamber. The exhibit continues through February. For more information about the exhibit, call the Chamber at 575.835.0424 or visit www.socorro-nm.com. For more information about the artist, visit http://JoelSmithArt.com
While this show exhibits his representational images of rock formations, valley streams and mountain meadows, Joel’s work isn’t about recreating a place. His paintings, he writes “are not concerned with a description of the seen world, rather they are involved with the mystery of the human experience.”
If you visit his website, you will be introduced to some very energetic abstracts but won’t see any of the current paintings in his collection online. You’ll have to visit the chamber office to see more. The chamber is open Monday thru Friday from 8 am – 5 pm.

Meanwhile, an exhibit of abstracts by Magdalena artist Estelle Roberge continues thru March 1. A native of Maine and a family of French-Canadian background, Roberge finds many similarities between the ocean and the New Mexico landscapes which she now traverses and which inspire her work.
These paintings and photographs emerge from a series of walks through various local and distant sites throughout the seasons, and they reflect my preoccupation with natural beauty specific to place, experienced through layers of abstracted memories. The interaction brings attention to natural transformations and seeks to develop meaning from wild terrain through abstractions. The context of the walk and the movements of my memory bring about painted forms.
From colors, textures, and surfaces of the desert and coast, the work evolves towards movement of memory, place, time, and presence.
The Macey Center Gallery is open Monday thru Friday 8 am to 5 pm and during special events. For more information 575-835-5342 or nleviner@admin.nmt.edu
