Truth or Consequences, NM: Rio Bravo Fine Art Gallery will present the 3rd annual Touched By Cancer art show beginning on April 18 at its gallery at 110 Broadway, in T or C. The show has historically been planned to coincide with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and this year is scheduled to close on May 8, the date of the 2009 Relay.
Touched By Cancer was founded to give residents of Sierra County who have felt the effects of their own or someone else's cancer an opportunity, through any media they choose, to exhibit creations that have come from those experiences. All ages have been welcome and art instructors from the T or C school district have been invited to submit work done by their students. Though entries to the show must be by Sierra County residents, all associated activities are open to the general public.
The show will depart from its traditional opening during the monthly TorC art hop to its own opening day and evening with activities that have been expanded from past years. From 12 to 3 pm there will be creation of prayer flags. Participants will be invited to either keep their work or to donate it for a raffle whose proceeds will be split between the American Cancer Society and the nonprofit Sierra County Arts Council. The Council is the project's primary funder and has deemed it important enough to steadily increase its financial contribution since the show's first presentation in 2006.
A potluck reception, for which folks are encouraged to bring food or drink to share, will take place from 5 to 6:30 pm preceding the 7 to 10 pm opening of the show. During the opening there will be space provided away from the main exhibit for those who need a more private venue to retreat to, as the subject matter of the show may evoke private emotional responses or the need for a more intimate space for discussion.
A color brochure and the up-to-the-minute schedule for this upcoming TorC art happening can be found here (http://www.riobravofineart.net/Exhibit_Flyer_72_dpi_color_copy.pdf).
