Escuela Del Sol Montessori school
celebrates 40 years
Projects include Harwood Art Center
Albuquerque - Escuela Del Sol Montessori school is celebrating its forty year committment to excellence in innovative and creative youth education. Wow! The very existence and perserverance of The Harwood Art Center demonstrates Escuela's dedication to the youth and adult artists, poets, enthusiasts, dancers, film makers, and extended community members who've nurtured their creativity here for nearly 20 years!
Escuela del Sol Montessori was founded by a group of parents in 1968. The strong sense of community formed then persists today. We are a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) corporation governed by a Board of Directors consisting of parents, members of the community at large and staff representatives. Together with our art center, the school has a wonderful reputation for excellence, inclusion and diversity. Through our outreach programs and service learning, Escuela del Sol is active in the community and partners with organizations such as Health Care for the Homeless.
Because Escuela del Sol (and therefore The Harwood) is a 501c3 non-profit organization, we depend upon the generousity of you, our Friends and Members, to continue offering our diverse programming.
Drawing for the raffle is May 8 with the Grand Prize of $10,000! Other prizes are a week's escape to the glorious island of Kauai; n a week in on the fabulous Upper West side of Manhattan, just 2 blocks from Central Park and next door to Lincoln Center; and a weeklong stay with your family just one mile away from the gates of Disneyworld.
The Harwood Art Center of Escuela del Sol Montessori is Albuquerque’s only full-spectrum community art center and the city's largest multi-media art space. From 1925 - 1976 the building housed the Harwood Girls School, a Methodist boarding school for girls. Now this registered historic site is a thriving community of artists, and a gathering place that brings the public and the arts community together. The Harwood Art Center is owned and operated by Escuela del Sol Montessori, and offers a vast array of arts programs to the community including theater and dance performances, concerts, film screenings, exhibitions, extensive classes for all ages in both visual and performing arts, and a summer arts camp for children. The building’s old dormitory rooms and classrooms have been converted to lively studios for artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, jewelry, fiber art, graphic design, book making and more. The old dining hall is regularly transformed into a performance space for concerts and performance events. The building also houses 3 formal art galleries and 2 community art galleries, a dance studio, a darkroom and a children's art studio.
Gallery hours are M-F 10-4. Visit http://www.harwoodartcenter.org/
