Magdalena – LONDON FRONTIER THEATRE COMPANY will Present RACING THE MOON: a Westering Adventure the weekend of Oct. 28-30.
In this newest creation by Donna Todd, the year is 1921. There are almost 40,000 miles of automobile roads in the United States–not all (or even most) are paved but “See America First!” has become a watchword, and some intrepid automobilists have driven all the way from one coast to the other. They follow the great National Trails Roads: the Lincoln Highway, the Ocean-to-Ocean, & those named for the pioneer routes, like the Old Santa Fe Trail, sometimes making almost 200 miles a day!
And then – there’s the call of The West! Land of Adventure and Romance, of strong, silent Cowboys and stalwart Indians, a wild, Untamed Land – as seen in the motion pictures of Bronco Billy Anderson and William S. Hart, as described by Zane Grey (Riders of the Purple Sage – ahh!) and by Mrs. Jackson in Ramona (“wasn’t that the most moving romance?”), as painted by.... oh, you know, Artists, like....well, those in Santa Fe and Taos.
But a long journey by automobile is an adventure, especially for two women traveling without an escort or even a driver. Elisabeth Westering & niece Daisy are New Women – they vote, wear short(er) skirts, have been seen to smoke in public, and are quite competent drivers (in most situations) – in other words, they are modern, daring – and conveniently, quite well-to-do, which allows them to set off from their hometown of Chicago in that acme of touring cars, a long, low, powerful Pierce Arrow. Destination: New Mexico, “Land of Sunshine” and of colorful, passionate Spanish heritage. (“Don’t some of them...the men, of course....almost remind one of Rudolph Valentino?!”) However, all is not quite as pictured in Art, Literature, and Cinema, and the (mis)adventures, as Expectation clashes with Experience, introduce two of the twentieth century’s Truly Amazing Women.
RACING THE MOON is a wild & witty observation on one of the most revolutionary eras in America's history: start of the Roaring Twenties & last gasp of the Frontier, with Eastern Society & Art adopting the Wild West
Performers are Diane Allen, Janice Brunacini, Fernando Monta_o, Vanessa Qui_ones, Donna Todd, and Donald Wiltshire, all of Magdalena. LFTC Tech Director Don Wiltshire is set and lighting designer, while Ron Thornton handles sound . Script and direction by Donna Todd; Michael Mideke is videographer.
Since making Magdalena its home in 1996, London Frontier Theatre Company has presented 38 original productions, including 10 episodes of the popular “LOST WIFE CREEK” series, set in rural New Mexico in the Great Depression era. LFTC offers a variety of plays from original scripts, ensemble work, and adaptations of literary classics and contemporary writings, incorporating the area's vivid multi-cultural history to create exciting, entertaining theatre.
