Fort Stanton State Monument will celebrate 150 years of service to New Mexico and the United States with Fort Stanton, Live! on August 12, 2006 at the Ft. Stanton State Monument. The program for the day is rich, varied and exciting. It is designed to appeal to the whole family. Fort Stanton is located on Highway 220 in Lincoln County (near Ruidoso).

The 2006 "Fort Stanton, Live" celebration features the famous "Flying J Wranglers" of the Flying J Ranch Chuck Wagon Supper and Western Show, a traditional Ruidoso attraction. There will also be two separate groups of Mescalero Apache dancers performing traditional ceremonial dances. Military reenactors, 1850's Dragoons, and Civil War and Indian Wars soldiers, will perform cavalry, infantry and artillery demonstrations and drills.

There will also be numerous living history exhibits including blacksmiths, mountain men, an operating ranch chuck wagon, spinners and weavers, weapons and historical artifact exhibitors, ladies in period costumes, storytellers and demonstrations of 19th century household skills.

Historical impersonators include Lydia Lane, an Army wife who lived at the Fort in the 1880's, a 19th century schoolmaster, and a Buffalo soldier.

There will be a slide show and lecture on the Fort Stanton Cave and its fabulous "Snowy River" feature. Musical attractions include Tomas Vigil playing traditional Spanish guitar, Doug Fuqua, an old time pianist, a barbershop quartet and Lanny Maddox playing Indian flute. The Hondo Valley dancers, a traditional Spanish dancing group will perform as will two square dance groups. There is a wide variety of traditional 1800's children's games and activities this year.

John Ryan will autograph copies of his book on Fort Stanton, and Jim McBride will autograph copies of his books on the Internment Camp and the Hospital era. There will also be guided tours available of the old Commanding Officer's quarters, the Internment Camp, and the 1876 Stables now undergoing restoration.

Admission is free, but a $5.00 parking donation per car is requested.
