Adding to the burgeoning art scene in T or C is a new shop called Celestial Creations which will showcase all things New Mexico. While owner Celeste Rich says there will be plenty of art by local talents on the walls, she is going a big step further in her inventory. Included in her lines will be a wide variety of merchandise from New Mexico artisans, including everything from hand-crafted furniture, bath and beauty items, quilts and pillows, jewelry, weavings, clothing, wall-hangings, chimes, and a wide assortment of home décor items, as well as unusual greeting cards. Many of the creations will be one-of-a-kind or limited edition—and not just the paintings—more on that later.

Celeste has spent the past couple of months refurbishing the building formerly occupied by Barb’s Gift Gallery, including painting both inside and out, new carpeting, lighting, etc. Response from the local community has been ‘overwhelmingly positive’, Rich says. ‘I started out seeking out people whose creations I thought would enhance the atmosphere I want to create; now they are coming to me saying they were told they needed to come talk to Celeste! And, I’m also starting to hear that word on the street is that potential customers are excited to come in and see what we have. It’s all very exciting and rewarding.’

While the actual opening date of Celestial Creations, located at 220 N. Date St. in Truth or Consequences, is tentatively scheduled for August 15th, her Grand Opening is set to coincide with Destination Sierra County weekend of Sept. 22-24. ‘I’m hoping having a Grand Opening that weekend, with music and perhaps a book signing and artists-on-site, will bring more people than might ordinarily be able to make it’, she says.

Rich’s goal is to have as many items as she can be exclusive to her shop in T or C. ‘I want folks who come in here to see all kinds of wonderful creations they can’t find down the street—maybe in Albuquerque or Hillsboro, but nowhere else here in town’, she continues.

Apparently that hasn’t been a problem for her. She has already gathered together many long-time locals who have agreed to place their pieces in her ‘micro-emporium’ on an exclusive basis in T or C. Some of the better-known artists/artisans that will have their works on display include Carol Plec (hand-stitched pillows and quilts, paintings, and limited edition prints), Barbara Massengill (artist on cover of current Sierra County Artists Directory), Grasshopper Silk by Sandy Hopper (hand-dyed one-of-a-kind silks and wall decor), Marge Myers (limited edition photographic works), Amanda Parks (paintings), Mundy’s Collections by Amanda Rodriquez (glass bead and copper wire jewelry), EarthSpirit Arts by Aspen ni Wood (meditation dioramas), Tony Otero (hand-crafted furniture and retablos), Kat’s Paws by Kat Wright (hand-woven rugs/wall-hangings), and Millie McLeod (artist/photographer), and Jewelry by June. She will also feature all-natural merchandise from Black Hawk Ranch (soaps, hand-creams, meticulously painted ostrich eggs), Black Pearl Botanicals (bath salts, massage oils), Clear Light—The Cedar Company (sachets, lotions), and too many more than can be mentioned here.

Rich is not forgetting the gourmet food crowd, either. There will be products from Bosque Coffee Roasters, Southwestern Chutney, 505 Southwestern Chile, Black Hawk Ranch, Fine Chocolates by Amour and much more.

Connie Baca, who will also be the Assistant Manager, does fabulous hand-painted chile wall-plaques, gourds, furniture, bowls, vases, barbed-wire art and much more. ‘I can’t tell you how fortunate I feel to have Connie here; she has lots of retail experience, plus is SO talented in so many mediums—we’re actually showcasing her in the front room of the shop in the Southwestern section’.

Their will be a wide variety of jewelry from several artisans in price ranges from under $10 to several hundred dollars. Almost everything is hand-crafted, making each item a unique creation from New Mexico.

Celestial Creations will have a wonderfully unique assortment of greeting cards and refrigerator magnets from all over New Mexico—in price ranges to suit any budge—including Anne Taintor, Touch-Art, Obsidian Mountain (art by Douglas Johnson), Buffalo Nickels, Conscientious Cowgirl, Rumplestilskin Designs (art by Diana Bryer).
While the store isn’t open as of this writing, she is planning on participating in the September Gallery Hop, which occurs the second Saturday of each month in TorC. Call Celeste at 894-7591 for more specific information about the store or their Grand Opening on Sept. 23rd.
