On Saturday, October 8, Socorro's historic plaza was closed to traffic as folks from town and the surrounding areas came to our fair city to enjoy and celebrate SocorroFest, 2005. The plaza was filled all day long and late into the night with music and revelry, songs and dancing. During the day a non-stop list of popular local bands played for the audience. Plus, vendors and artisans from throughout central New Mexico displayed their wares and creative skills for all to see.

When we arrived at the plaza late in the afternoon, we found it filled with hundreds of people. As it turned out, the band that was playing at the time had just completed their last song and we discovered we were about to be treated to a 30-minute performance by a local team of Belly Dancers!

So we kept our cameras busy for quite a while filming those lovely ladies as they demonstrated their somewhat provocative skills to the great pleasure and amusement of their mesmerized audience. Finger cymbals chimed and the scantily clad Ladies danced barefoot as a strange-sounding collection of middle-eastern music accompanied them in the background. It was quite an interesting show indeed. Our photographer captured quite a few images (plus video) of the performance. So, we've attached a few of them to this article. The rest can now be found along with segments of video recorded during the performance in a brand new Steppin Out Gallery titled, (what else?) "Live from SocorroFest!". You can find our SocorroFest gallery here (http://www.steppinoutnewmexico.com/pp-514/showgallery.php?cat=510).

We kept our video cam spinning away throughout the performance and hope to be able to provide additional video segments for your viewing enjoyment in the next day or two. Watch this message thread and our SocorroFest gallery for details!

After the dancers had completed their performance, we wandered over to the Chamber of Commerce offices and managed to snap a few photos of the Fabric Arts Show that was taking place there. You'll find those Fabric Art images in our gallery too (http://www.steppinoutnewmexico.com/pp-514/showgallery.php?cat=510).

Oh, and if you were in the SocorroFest audience during the Belly Dancer's performance, you might want to look carefully through our images. It may just be that you appear in our Live from SocorroFest gallery too!

All in all, it was quite a day. If you missed it, we're sorry you did. Hopefully our gallery will help you enjoy at least a taste of what the event-filled day was all about.

See you next year, at SocorroFest 2006!
