</TD><TD vAlign=top>(Las Cruces, NM) The Tombaugh Gallery of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces will feature the local chapter of the Society of Layerists in Multimedia for the month of September. The opening on Friday, September 8 from 5-9pm will also be the Gallery's first inclusion in the annual ARTSHOP with 9 other galleries or venues with special shows that night. Tickets are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door at participating galleries. Exhibitors at the Tombaugh Gallery will include June Decker, Flo Hosa Dougherty, Betty Sweeney, Christina Campbell, Sylvia Bowers, Richard and Dorothy Rising, Laurel Weathersby and Roy van der Aa.
The Society of Layerists in Multi Media (SLMM) was founded in 1982 as a network for artists interested in a holistic approach, defined by founder Mary Carroll Nelson as "a perspective related to the time/space continuum. In layered art, many events connect at a single point in space; and many points in space are linked at a single moment in time.". Layerist art does not emphasize physical layering as a style but rather express a metaphysical content that refers to something other than the marks or images presented. Meeting monthly, the local group often focuses on exercises to challenge one's approach to imagery and image creation and an exploration of individual artist's personal creative journeys. SLMM's many regional chapters participate in shows and tours in the U.S. and abroad.
The show will run from September 8-29. The Tombaugh Gallery is located at 2000 S. Solano in Las Cruces and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am - 2pm, or by appointment. For information, call 522-7281. The 13th Annual ARTSHOP is presented by the Dona Ana Arts Council (DAAC), (505) 523-6403 and proceeds will benefit the Summer Career Art Path program in the area's Middle Schools.
