Mountainair – The weather was gorgeous and sunflowers were everywhere – on people’s heads, on their cheeks, in their food and displayed in their art. Eleanor and Nick Riley were two of the many visitors who enjoyed dressing up in the theme.

Even nature participated in the annual Sunflower Festival and Folk Art Day, with thousands and thousands of the bright yellow flowers lining the roads leading to Mountainair.
Retablo artists from Santa Fe and Valencia County exhibited exquisite works of art in the Mountainair schools fine auditorium and art of all kinds was offered in the community center, which also was the site for a sunflower cooking contest and the annual hat contest.

Cibola Arts Gallery was awash in bright colors reflecting the Sunflower theme. You can see more of Cibola Artists at www.cibolaarts.com (http://www.cibolaarts.com)

Even the sidewalks of the Shaffer hotel were lined with exhibitors.

Meanwhile at the Shaffer Hotel lawn, a crowd of people sat on the lawn or in chairs to listen to the annual Poets and Writers Picnic, with over a dozen published and novice writers taking turn at the mic to read their offerings.

The bright cheery faces of sunflowers were reflected on visitors and organizers faces and everyone we spoke to reported a good time. It was great to visit with old friends and meet some new ones in the beautiful setting of Mountainair.
Among those we rarely see any more were Judy Mowris and Roy Kirby who exhibited in the pavilion at Shaffer Hotel. Judy has put her talented hands to many creative endeavors and currently is painting glassware.
