CROP WALK ‘06
Santa Fe NM
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR CROP WALK 2006!
Help end hunger locally and around the world
SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO Sept 1, 2006: Come rain or shine, many Santa Fe area residents will join in the CROP WALK on Sunday, October 8 at 2:00 PM, with check-in at 1:00 PM. The five-kilometer WALK will begin at St. Francis Cathedral School, 275 East Alameda in Santa Fe. Organizers will also offer a shorter walk route for those who want it. CROP WALK offers a wonderful opportunity for groups from faith organizations, schools, businesses, senior centers, and community organizations to team up for a good cause. Consider getting a team together to raise funds for local and international hunger-relief efforts.

This year Santa Fe and some 2,000 cities and towns nationwide are joining together in interfaith community CROP WALKS around the theme "Walking Together." Many CROPWALKERS will be wearing "Walking Together" T-shirts, proclaiming their solidarity with the millions of neighbors around the world who have to walk to live--as well as with the millions served by local food pantries, food banks, and meal sites here in the U.S. These local ministries share in the funds raised by CROP WALKS. A portion of the funds raised in Santa Fe will go to battle hunger in northern New Mexico through The Food Depot.
Africa is one part of the world where CROP WALKS are making a big difference--in helping people grow food for their families, in providing clean water to villages, in working to assure that schools are zones of safety and learning, in the struggle against the AIDS pandemic, and in countless other ways. And this year Africa presents special challenges, with the uprooting of millions in the Darfur region of Sudan by government-sanctioned violence, and the severe drought-induced food shortage plaguing Niger and other parts of the Sahel region.

CROP WALKS help to support the overall ministry of Church World Service (CWS), especially the grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts of partner agencies in more than 80 countries. CROP WALKS help to provide tools of hope that empower people to meet their own needs. From seeds and tools, to wells and water systems, to nutrition-enhancing Moringa trees, to technical training and micro-enterprise loans, the key is people working together to identify their own development priorities, their strengths and their needs -- something CWS has learned through some 58 years of working in partnership around the world.
The Food Depot is northern New Mexico’s food bank, serving as a not-for-profit clearinghouse for food donated by private and public sources to fight the ongoing battle against hunger and poverty. The food bank’s service area includes seven counties – Santa Fe, San Miguel, Rio Arriba, Taos, Mora, Colfax and Los Alamos – in northern New Mexico. The Food Depot distributes food and related products through 100 not-for-profit agencies serving working families, children, people who are homeless, seniors, people with physical or mental challenges, and people who are homebound due to illness. Each month, the food bank distributes an average of 200,000 pounds of food and household products, providing more than 260,000 meals through its member agencies.
