Hello! Are there any writing groups in Socorro? If not, is anyone interested in helping me start one? I will be moving to Socorro in July 2007. Writing groups are an edifying experience for poets and fiction writers, a great way to make contacts and develop talent!

Thanks!

Dear Britt,

Nope don't recon thar is no real writerz group in this heer town... but sum of uz keepz a tryin anyhow. Thar was sort of a revolutionary planning committee that was hosted a yeer or so ago by our pubic libary and they wuz oh say fourtee or so folks what came out and sayd they wuz writerz and a few of 'em do sort of git stuff in our locul paperz ever onest in a whyle... but folks down heer what knows how to wryte is kept purty bizy helpin out them that don't know. It'd be nyce to have someone in town who could be the spark that sets our writerz to burning tho. 'Cuz tharz some reel creative folks in this county. Better'n most places in the state, I recon.

Heck we even got one lady whose the ghost wryter for her dog, Sylvia. 'N that Sylvia's won heck of a lot smarter'n half the polytishuns in this state. That's fer dang shure!

Anyhow, thanks very much fer the post, Ma'am. We're a-lookin forward to havin you in this heer town, even if you are a Buyhigh! ;) :p

P.S. In case, you can't tell, Britt, I just finished posting a James Whitcomb Riley poem. That dialogue he wrote is sort of catching, you know. I wasn't making fun of you nor anyone else in what I honestly believe is the best county in the whole darn state. We indeed DO have many talented writers in Socorro county but at the moment, there is no active local writers group that I'm aware of. But with a bail of hay, a few matches and a little determination, I'll bet you could set the writers in this county on fire very easily. Heck, I'll bet even Miss Sylvia would join up!

Now, don't you agree this sounded MUCH better in the Hoosier dialect Mr Riley was so famous for?

Thanks very much for the post, Milady... and welcome to the pages of Steppin' Out New Mexico where we try hard never to take ourselves too seriously!

Respectfully Yours,
Your once-a-Hoosier-always-a-Hoosier publisher (a.k.a. Person-to-Blame),
Greg Platt

P.P.S. There's a Steppin' Out writer's blog sitting here and waiting for ANYONE who has the time and inclination to seize the reigns and host it. You'd be welcome to apply for the (unpaid) job, if you're so inclined, Ma'am!

WebMaster's Comment:

Actually, this question probably belonged in our Socorro Community Forum rather than in our Poets and Writers New Forum. However, I exercised my WebMaster's perogatives and left it in the new forum rather than move it, because I wanted as many Socorro County Writers and Poets to see it as possible. If you are a Socorro Country Writer or Poet who is also a registered members of our site (registration is FREE), feel free to post responses to this news item directly. Although all posts in our News Forums must be approved before they appear, I will be happy to approve all appropriate responses ASAP.

Thanks for Posting your question here, Britt!
