The new Alto Artist Tour image gallery can be found in our Galleries Section. The easiest way to reach our Galleries Section is to click the "Galleries" link in our site's Main Menu which appears near the top left corner of virtually all site pages. You can also access the new Alto Artist Tour Gallery directly by clicking here (http://sonewmex.com/pp-514/showgallery.php/cat/581).

The artist reviews are currently viewable from the "Recent Reviews" sidebar box in the left sidebar column on our front page. They can also be read in the "Staff Reviews" section which appears in the center column's "Editorials and Reviews" Section near the bottom of our front page. Finally, "Staff Reviews" can also be found by clicking the "Editorials and Reviews" link in our site's main menu which appears near the top left corner of virtually all site pages. As part of the Alto Artist Tour gallery and review project, our staff individually light-and-color adjusted, straightened, cropped and resized each of the 114 photos in the final gallery to help them fit best into the gallery format. We also hand sorted and carefully analyzed every image in an effort to ensure that each artwork was presented in the best way and attributed to the right artist. Where possible we also tried to provide web addresses, phone numbers and email contact info for every artist as well. Believe it or not, the Alto Artist Tour Gallery and Review project required nearly 70 hours of work to complete. That's a lot of time to us. So, we'd like to know if you feel these projects are worth the time and effort we're devoting to them.

These large scale art event artist gallery and review projects are new to the Steppin' Out site. Indeed, they are essentially an experiment for us. This is only the second such large-scale event-report of this type that we've published to date. But we tend to think they are worthwhile. The difficulty is, these projects seem to take longer than we expect and -- by their nature -- they must be ""worked in" around our other ongoing business activities and publishing schedule.

These expanded event reports are one of several "Cornerstone Service Expansion Projects" we've undertaken in 2006 involving our web site. The first of our Cornerstone Projects was launched in February. It involved a major expansion of our site's Community Forums. The first goal of that project was to make our community forums more visible on our front page. We completed that project in February when we launched the Community Forums block on our front page.

Later -- in case you didn't notice -- we researched and added nearly 300 new community-related links to our Community Forums in March and April. We did that because we believe having key community links published in every community's forum is useful to friends and visitors from each of our 40 target communities. We successfully complete this project in May.

During the summer, we tackled our second major Cornerstone Project when we agreed to devote half of one full-time staff member's time to vastly expanding our state-wide event calendar. You probably noticed that project's impact on our paper edition's event calendar in August when our calendar doubled in size from one page and around 100 events bi-monthly to two pages and about 250 events. As we continue work on that project, we've seen our online event calendar grow from a few dozen events at the end of May to over 2,200 events today... and we've only been working on this project for 5 months! Believe it or not, it now looks like our full year online state-wide event calendar will eventually contain 6,000 events!

Our third major Cornerstone Project started in July when we decided to try publishing expanded art event reports on our website. We prepared the first of those reports for Ruidoso's Art Loop weekend -- which occurred in early July. We completed and published our report for that event 6 weeks later in mid-August. That project -- which only covered about 60% of the artists who participated in the event included the creation of a gallery containing 124 photos and the writing of 14 reviews covering 17 artists.

Our Alto Artist Tour report covers 100% of the 18 artists who participated in the weekend and required the writing of 16 reviews. Two of our reviews covered husband and wife artist teams which is how we managed to write less reviews than there were artists participating in the tour. We invested about 70 hours of staff time to attend the event, conduct related research edit, organize and post the pictures, write, fact-check and edit the reviews and publish our final report on the web.

So, given the amount of time and expense involved, Steppin' Out would like to know how YOU, our readers -- and the artists involved -- feel about the value and usefulness of these expanded art event reports. Are they something you enjoy? Do you think they're worthwhile? Or should we just scrap them and add a "sports" or "obits" section instead?

We're actually not kidding here. We really would like to know what you think. Please take a moment to answer our new reader poll at the top of this article and give us your feedback. You can find and vote on our reader poll here (http://sonewmex.com/forums/showthread.php?p=546#post546). Our poll will run for 90 days until January 14, 2007. We promise to listen as carefully as we can!

Oh, one more detail... For those who may be interested, our 4th Cornerstone Project was completed in October when we added a new self-publishing feature to our site. That feature allows you to print your own personal copy of Steppin' Out right on your own personal printer. If you like it, we intend to continue to support this new feature in future issues.

Thanks very much for your help and for being part of our community. We hope you enjoy our new Alto Artist Tour Gallery and Artist Reviews. Please let us know what you think.
