El Malpais means "the badlands". This volcanic area holds many surprises. Volcanos, lava flows, cinder cones, pressure ridges and complex lava tubes dominate the landscape -- much of which is barely 10,000 years old... Come prepared to hike!

Many who passed this way left their mark at El Morro... New Mexico's famous graffiti rock with 400 year-old messages. There's even a note from Juan de Onate in 1605. Years before the Pilgrims landed Spaniards were already leaving graffiti here!

www.Avant-Gardening.com is the home of one of New Mexico's best high-desert gardening research centers. They host low-cost seminars & classes to teach others how to grow herbs, veggies, etc. in desert climate. Drop in, you'll learn lots!

Visit the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano, "Land of Fire and Ice." on the continental divide. Great day trip for those who don't mind walking to see one of nature's wonders... Walking inside a young volcano whose lava tubes are coated with ice awaits!

Sittin in old Ramah (where is a local secret) is the Ramah Museum. Lots of relics of local history can be found there. Hours are Fridays 1-4 p.m. Call Paul at 505-783-4677 for details and directions. The museum director is age 87. Please be patient!

Ramah is in "checkerboard" country where alternating land sections are either owned by Indians or non-Indians. So No set of links for Ramah would be complete without including the local Navajo Chapter site. Click here to visit them.

No Gallup/Grants/Ramah area visit is complete without a day trip out to Candy Kitchen Ranch and its unique Wolf Sancutary near Ramah. This site also offers tourism info for the Ramah area.

This very interesting page is part of the Ice Caves site (www.icecaves.com). It includes and describes lots of places to visit along Highway 53 around Ramah

This page occurs on the "Pet"roglyphs site -- web home to a nice bunch of folks who advocate on behalf of pets and animals. Read what they say about Candy Kitchen Ranch (a.k.a. Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary) then visit their home page at: www.petroglyph
