Default The Paul Elwood Mountain Collective plays Jan. 4

© 2006 SONewMex.com Reprint Permission Granted
The Paul Elwood Mountain Kollektief returns to the Adobe Bar of the Taos Inn on Wednesday, January 4, 2006, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.

There is no cover charge.

Performing with five-string banjoist Paul Elwood is Chipper Thompson on guitar, mandolin, and bajo sexto, and Transgalactic electro-cellist Michael Kott; Kim Treiber will make a special appearance to contribute her own original material. The evening will also feature originals by Elwood and Thompson, free improvisations with Kott, and a number of offbeat covers from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, the Talking Heads, and the Moody Blues.

A current resident in theSouthern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, Elwood is a one-time first place winner of the Kansas State Bluegrass Banjo Championship, and performs regularly in the realms of bluegrass, free improvisation, and new music. Recent performances of his music have been presented on the Technosonics Electroacoustic series at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, where Elwood was a Visiting Scholar in November, and at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

Southwest audiences are well-versed in the performances of multi-instrumentalist Chipper Thompson. A brilliant musician/songwriter, Thompson has recorded many of his tunes on a number of CDs including "Strange Lullabies,” “Penny Dreadfuls,” and “Am I Born to Die.” Thompson has notably performed and recorded with Burning Joan, Connie Dover, Mason Brown, and Roger Landes, among others.

Michael Kott is legendary in a variety of music circles having worked in the realms of avant-garde, free improvisation, bluegrass, and trance-music, to name a few. He appears on the PBS special Music from a Painted Cave, with Robert Mirabal and the RareTribalMob, and the companion audio CD of the same title. Kott also appears on Taos Tales (Robert Mirabal, SilverWave). He has participated in recording projects and performances with the tribal-trance ensemble Sons of Ganesh, bluegrass legend Larry Perkins, and Flecktone Victor Wooten.
