Default Dreams and education

The ‘I have a Dream’ foundation was formed to provide educational opportunities to the kids coming from low income and high violence regions of the nation. It was quiet an impulsive decision on the part of the founder, Eugene Lang, to start such an initiative. He was moved by the amount of drop out rates happening in the elementary schools and wanted to curb this trend. So to control the high drop out rates, the businessman proposed to finance the educational needs of each and every child graduating from high school and entering college. The proposal was not just accepted in New York but became hugely successful across the nation with many cities coming forward to adopt the program

Dallas became the second city after New York, to adopt the program. It was a huge success in Dallas as well with increasing graduation rates of students. In May 1999, the Foundation had its first class of fourth graders adopted in 1990, to graduate from high school with a graduation rate of 64%. The board members of IHAD-Dallas now include names like including David Disiere of the Deep South Surplus of Texas, Helen M. Dorsey, Dr. Pepper/Seven Up Inc. James W. Loose Galloway-James Inc. and others.

Today the children of the foundation are studying in some of the best colleges of the world. Some of the reputed colleges entered by these children or dreamers include Southern Methodist University, Dallas Baptist University, The University of Dallas, University of North Texas, Texas Woman's University, Grambling State University, University of Houston, Prairie View A&M University
