Thumbs up Monte Cristo Gallery February Artists of the Month

Kitty Jones & Anita Manzenberger
Featured Artists at 'Ghost Town' of Chloride's Monte Cristo Gallery

The Artists of the Month featured at Chloride, New Mexico's Monte Cristo Gallery are Kitty Jones, counted cross stitch artist, and Anita Manzenberger, fiber artist. Their art will be featured throughout February in the historic Ghost Town of Chloride's local cooperative gallery.

Kitty Jones has been doing counted cross-stitch for more than 25 years

Kitty has been doing counted cross stitch for more than 25 years. While working at the phone company she saw a friend start with a blank piece of material and through many coffee breaks and lunch hours watched as a beautiful creation came to life, with just a lot of x’s stitched onto the fabric. That year Kitty made the first of 17 family Christmas stockings for her infant son. Since, she has created pictures, hand towels, baby bibs and many other fun and useful items. Kitty and her husband live in the mountains northwest of Chloride where they enjoy the outdoors. Kitty says,"I still love to create something beautiful from a blank piece of material." You can meet Kitty at the Monte Cristo on February 5th, 12th, and 19th.

Anita says she is "addicted to fiber" and that crafting came naturally thanks in part to her mother who was always sewing. She considers herself an eclectic artisan, trying whatever catches her fancy at the moment, as long as it involves wool, threads and/or fabric. Her first love is spinning, hand dying, and then knitting the yarns she created into something beautiful. And whether it be a hat, scarf or sweater, they are beautiful. Recently, Anita’s focus has been on tote bags, incorporating punch needle embroidery, quilting, knitting, felting and collage techniques. Anita and her husband currently reside in Alamogordo, NM, but spend time at their family home in Chloride whenever they can. You can tell when Anita is at their Chloride home by the hand dyed yarns hanging out to dry. When you see the yarn, stop in to visit. Anita plans to be in Chloride the weekends of February 3rd and February 17th.

Works by Kitty and Anita are available at the Monte Cristo Gift Shop & Gallery, located in historic Chloride, NM. just 35 miles west of Truth or Consequences via Hwy 52. The Monte Cristo is open daily from 10-4. For more information contact the Gallery at 505-743-0493 or montecristo@zianet.com.

For dozens of photos plus a 23 page history of the old Sierra County Black Range Mountains mining communities of Winston (formerly Fairview) and Chloride, see these pages of Art Pike's remarkable New Mexico Wanderings web site.* To see and enjoy the lovely art of Kitty Jones and Anita Manzenberger, be sure to visit Monte Cristo Gallery in the historic New Mexico ghost town of Chloride.

* [Editor's Note: Art Pike, creator of the New Mexico Wanderings site, and a great lover and student of New Mexico history passed away peacefully in December 2005. In leaving our world, he left behind an amazing web site that meticulously documents in words and pictures the early history of dozens of New Mexico communities like Chloride and Winston. In the words of his son, David Pike - author of Roadside New Mexico - A Guide to Historic Markers, "He continued to work on his site until he could no longer get to his computer." Fortunately, for lovers of New Mexico history, Art's family agreed to keep his site alive in his memory. May he rest peacefully knowing his historical legacy is neither lost nor forgotten. - TG Platt Webmaster & Online Publisher, Steppin' Out New Mexico.]
