Bosque del Apache notes National Wildlife Refuge Week
Wildlife Refuge near Socorro, New Mexico
marks National Refuge Week with art, dedication
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, San Antonio, New Mexico – The Bosque del Apache NWR celebrates National Wildlife Refuge Week on Sat., Oct. 6, with the dedication of a major piece of artwork and an afternoon of music and art.
The dedication at 11:00 a.m.will be of a sculpture created by Socorro artist Sharon Fullingim in memory of Bosque senior biologist John Taylor. The sculpture depicts two life-size sandhill cranes cast in bronze, backed by carved limestone corn stalks mounted on a limestone base. The sculpture stands on a site near the visitor center overlooking the wetlands of which Taylor was a principal architect. Members of the Taylor family will participate in the dedication.
The traditional Friends of the Bosque Artists Reception from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. includes live music, snacks and light refreshments and a chance to meet eight acclaimed artists.
The annual Artists Reception features work whose themes are related to the refuge and its wildlife created by eight recognized artists. Artists Fullingim (etchings, cast miniatures), Leon Miler (whose line drawing of sandhill cranes was selected as theme art for the 2007 Festival of the Cranes), Matthew Mitchell (jewelry), Skeeter Leard (pastels and acryllics), Valerie Graves and Sandy Seth (pastels, photos and mixed media), Jerry Goffe (photography) and Don Boyd (large-format photography) will discuss and offer a selection of their work for sale.
Music and refreshments will be set up in the Christina Ann Lannan Educational Annex beginning at 1:00 p.m. Music will be provided by the popular local vocal and instrumental group Tori & the Mechanics. Items available in the Bosque Nature Store, such as shade-grown coffee, herbal tea, dip mixes, Bosque honey, and salsa will be included in the food and beverage menu.
