"Black and Blue" 24" x 36" |
June/July 2002 Carrizozo – Gary Eklund is a narrative, artist/illustrator, whose imaginative style pays tribute to American artists and history. Gary’s Black and Blue was chosen for this month’s Steppin Out cover. Gary’s work falls somewhere between realism and caricature. His work is composed with great attention to detail and expresses compassion, humor, social commentary and great energy, with a complexity and sophistication underlying the first impression. “All of my works are the result of observation, imagination and memory, my inspirations are people with their follies and triumphs,” Gary says. Gary has no formal art training but his skill at executing what he sees, feels and thinks is evident in his work. His work catches your attention with its dramatic colors and simple geometric compositions. His love of contrast and contradiction is apparent as he plays with scale, color and cultural observation. Gary has exhibited in over 40 states and in more than 200 juried shows. The winner of the Grumbacher Gold Medallion, Gary was featured in the winter 2000 issue of Watercolor Magic Magazine and was among The 26 Best Watermedia Paintings of 1999.
