Alamogordo Launches New After School Program
Alamogordo Launches New After School Program

Alamogordo, NM - The New Mexico Museum of Space History and REAL KIDS, Inc., are teaming up to bringing Alamogordo area students a brand new after school program this fall. The REAL KIDS After School Program begins August 17, 2009, and will continue through the school year on regular school days. The program will effectively replace the C.A.F.E. (Community and Family Enrichment) Program which lost its funding after five years of serving four Alamogordo elementary schools.

A registration fair for the REAL KIDS After School Program will be held Saturday, August 8, at the White Sands Mall. Along with the registration materials, REAL KIDS educators will have several hands on activities for kids to do while parents are learning about this exciting new program.

Former C.A.F.E. staff member John Perry created the REAL KIDS, Inc., concept and presented it to Museum education staff who immediately saw the value for the community. C.A.F.E.s after school program served over 200 area students, said Randall Hayes, Museum Director, and with that gone, the REAL KIDS After School Program will fill the gap and offer a safe, mentoring environment. Several other former C.A.F.E. staff members have joined Perrys group, which will also be supported by the R.S.V.P. Foster Grandparent Program.

The Museum was a contract educational vendor for C.A.F.E. since its inception and now will be the host site and sponsor of its replacement. The Museum has four fully equipped classrooms, resident staff and educational expertise second to none in the area, said Hayes, and by utilizing these assets, coupled with the experience and enthusiasm of the C.A.F.E. staff, we believe we can jointly provide unique educational opportunities for the children.

The REAL KIDS After School Program Mission is to provide a unique and innovative educational environment for six to thirteen year old children during after school hours. It is designed to help children meet all of their educational goals and to expose them to new concepts and ideas to help prepare them for a bright future.

The REAL KIDS After School Program will be located in the New Mexico Museum of Space Historys IMAX Theater building. It will be open Monday through Friday on school days from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm, beginning August 17, 2009, through May 28, 2010. The program will provide academic support in areas such as reading, math, writing, science, social studies and computers. There will be a quiet space for students to complete homework assignments and to work with on-site tutors. We do want to remind parents, though, that some students may not finish all their homework even with the provided time and tutoring, so it will be important that parents follow up at home, said Perry. Recreational time is also included in the programs agenda, with regularly scheduled fitness activities along with time to just relax and converse with friends. In addition, enrichment activities are planned where students will be introduced to new ideas, different scientific concepts and unique arts and crafts projects.

Enrollment in the REAL KIDS After School Program has started. A registration fair for the REAL KIDS After School Program will be held Saturday, August 8, at the White Sands Mall. Along with the registration materials, REAL KIDS educators will have several hands on activities for kids to do while parents are learning about this exciting new program. The cost is $65.00 per week, per child. For more information, contact John Perry, REAL KIDS Director, at (575) 446-6141 or email realkidsinc@yahoo.com.
