October 2001

This month’s cover features an acrylic painting by Truth or Consequences resident, Lois V. Smith. Lois, however, uses a variety of mediums and techniques to create her lovely works, including some that evolved through what she calls “happy accidents.”  She particularly likes watercolors because of the way the colors flow together to sometimes create effects, that, while not intentional, still compliment the painting. She often uses a special Yupo paper, which is less absorbent, causing the colors to flow more freely. Ms. Smith also uses a technique which involves running water over pastel paintings to create what she terms “happy accidents.”

Lois Smith’s works can currently be viewed at the Café Rio in nearby Williamsburg and at the Gifted Hands Gallery in Silver City.
