Socorro and Bosque del Apache Refuge -
The 15th annual Festival of the Cranes Nov. 19-24 features events ranging from a dramatic protrayal of the "father" of the Wildlife Refuge System, Aldo Leopold by Richard Bodner, and featured speaker Mike Phillips with the Turner Endangered Species Fund; to special viewing events and artistic portrayals of the experience of viewing thousands of birds wintering at the refuge.

In Socorro, the Festival of the Cranes Crafts Fair features additional arts and crafts from artists around the region. Special tours and open houses in the historic district of Socorro also are planned. Call the Socorro Chamber of Commerce for additional information about Socorro's Open House on Friday.

The Village of Magdalena also hosts its own Fall Festival of Art featuring artists and artisans from the high country.

A concert by the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, a dinner theater, the annual Friends of the Bosque banquet, and the state Duck Calling Contest complement the week of events.

The festival is presented by the Friends of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Sponsors include the City of Socorro, the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce, New Mexico Tech, Eagle Optics and the refuge itself.

For a complete, up-to-date listing of open workshops, tours and events, visit the Friends of the Bosque website:
