Agate found in the Deming area.Deming – Jewelry, lapidary equipment and of course gems and geodes. The 43rd annual Rockhound Roundup will fill the Southwest New Mexico Fairgrounds here Thursday through Sunday, March 6-9. Admission is free and the event is huge entertaining over 5,000 visitors with displays and rock-related events. So far, 90 dealers have already registered for booth space.

You can browse for hours enjoying and shopping for gems, jewelry, tools, equipment, findings, rock slabs and crafted items. You may find Artisans wire wrapping jewelry, making a chain, silversmithing, cabochon polishing, doing scrimshaw or stringing beads. e part of the audience as geodes untold millions of years old are opened to 'first light'.

Rockhound State Park near DemingThe event began after the dedication of the Rock Hound State Park, 240 acres in the Little Florida Mountains donated to the state by Deming Ranchettes. The Chamber sponsored the first rock show. It’s been a yearly event ever since and now attracts many out of state participants.

You can purchase from any of the booths, or participate in auctions each evening. Or, go find your own rocks: Field trips are offered Thursday, Friday and Saturday for $5 or $10 donations. Onyx, agate, geodes and other gem stones can be found. For more information, call 575-546-0348.

City of Rocks State Park near DemingFor Steppin' Out readers who are active rock collectors, Rockhound State Park, located 12 miles southeast of Deming is a popular gathering spot year around; but especially during the Rockhound Round-up. Participants from around the world come here to explore the park for rare finds. Believe it or not, the park actually allows visitors to collect and keep up to 15 pounds of rocks!
