Summer 2003 A New Painter
On The Block
If you happened by the Socorro Chamber
of Commerce last December, or if you perused this spring’s Magdalena art
show, you likely remember being greeted by a large, eclectic display of
beautiful portraits and landscapes. The
creative hand responsible for those little beauties belongs to Margaret
Lucena. Margaret (her friends call her Margi)
is a wife, a mother, a grandmother and a friend, but regardless of which
hat she wears, she bears the soul of an artist.
She has planted her roots from Arkansas to Hawaii and now
(hopefully for good) she calls Socorro home.
Everywhere she has gone, Margi has absorbed the memories of the
people and the ambience of the place making them part of who she is.
This multi-faceted lady brings all of those pieces to the easel
creating beautiful, spirit-filled work.
Each visual creation, a small story from her life. Jane Fullerton, a/k/a Jo Bison, is a prolific painter. Her home/studio is awash with watercolors, framed and unframed, finished and unfinished. And her collection of slides of her work is just as extensive. “I’m undoubtedly ‘settled’ here,” she says. Her first studio was on Eaton Avenue and her first solo show was at the Socorro Public Library sponsored by WAIME, a professional group of Tech-associated women who spearheaded the opening of public library in Socorro.
