Default Jo Castillo featured artist at Peppers in July

Fugitive Texican Artist Escapes to New Mexico... Again!

Jo Castillo, artist

Magdalena, NM -Jo Knoblock Castillo returns to Peppers Art Gallery, 100 E 1st., Magdalena, New Mexico, with her fourth annual artist reception at 12:00 noon - 4:00 p.m., Saturday, July 7, 2007. Wine and cheese will be served. This is a great chance to meet Jo and see her new pastel and acrylic paintings in the exhibit entitled, "Recuerdos", mementos or souvenirs. In addition to Jo's reception, she will be painting and demonstrating in pastels on Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Stop by and meet Jo and visit with Peppers owners, Marky Bamert and Wendy Jones, and the other artists in the huge yard at Peppers. Events at Peppers are free.

Old Timers has been an annual event for over 30 years. Magdalena is a busy village on this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There is a rodeo for children, another for old cowboys 50 years and older, street dance, theater, arts and crafts, barbecue, pancake breakfast, New Mexican food, Navajo fry bread, parade and much more.

Jo has been drawing and painting as long as she can remember. Her vivid and descriptive paintings are created from recollections of living and traveling in much of North and South America. Recently, Jo has been working to create a more interactive presence on the world wide web. A current trend, for many artists, is to create a painting a day and offer them on a blog. Jo started a blog in June of 2006. Her blog is a daily commentary and includes photos of her paintings, sketches and hints or demos about art. Reading the blog is an excellent way to see the artist's new work and how it is developed.

Jo's web page has a new section devoted to plein air (painting outside from life). Travel presents many opportunities for plein air. It is a challenge to set up an easel and paint a scene in just a couple of hours. Jo says, "The light is very fleeting and you have to get down large sections of light and dark very quickly to establish your painting. Weather doesn't always cooperate and uninvited visitors like mosquitos or snakes are not uncommon. Animals and birds get used to artists as they are so still." Jo enjoys painting plein air right in her back yard. "The paintings for this show are areas dear to my heart in the Magdalena area and at home in the Lost Pines.

Jo and Gene, her spouse, travel every summer to escape the intense heat and humidity in Bastrop. New Mexico is the vacation spot of choice the last few years as Gene's mother, Frances, is 90 and in frail health. Before that it was off to Canada from Nova Scotia to British Columbia. They lived in Bolivia, Peru and Chile and traveled extensively in all of South America. Three of their four children live in the Austin area and one son and his family live in Kentucky, which makes travel across the United States obligatory.

The exhibit will be at Peppers through August. Some of Jo's work is available at Peppers Art Gallery in Magdalena on a permanent basis. For more information call Jo at 512 303-7419 or visit the web at www.jocastilloart.com and Peppers at 505 854-3696 and www.peppersgalery.com
