Socorro – Come spend Mother’s Day weekend in Socorro and enjoy the cultural fabric of the area in its many aspects.
Start the weekend Friday evening May 8 with a concert by Al Hurricane and Al Hurricane Jr. at NM Tech’s Macey Center.
Then, on Saturday and Sunday, (May 9 & 10) you’ll be enchanted by the sights and sounds of the annual Socorro Mothers Day PowWow at Sedillo Park. There is no admission charge so bring a comfy chair and your camera and be prepared to see some beautify native dress, fascinating dancing and hauntingly beautiful music. The PowWow begins at noon on Saturday and continues till midnight.
On Sunday, the PowWow begins at 11 am with gourd dancing and continues till 6 pm. Grand entries are set each day. Other special events include Pueblo Throws, Eagle Feather presentation and honoring of all mothers.
This year’s special guests will be a presentation by members of the Buffalo Soldiers Society of New Mexico. They will discuss the bravery and heritage of the Buffalo Soldiers and show various artifacts from the era at 2 pm on Saturday at the nearby Senior Center.
