Carrizozo, NM – Fall is in the air and excitement is mounting for the second annual Burro Serenade and Auction in this little town at the crossroads.

The Burro Serenade and Auction, started just last year by Gallery 408 owners Joan and Warren Malkerson, is quickly becoming The big fall event in these parts – and all the fun is a fund raiser for area animal shelters.

Last year, the Malkersons purchased 22 burros and found 22 different artists to take them home, paint and decorate them in all different styles and colors and return them for the sale and auction.

“And what a delight and surprise they were,” said Joan Malkerson, a burro artist herself. “We just couldn’t believe how unique and wonderful each burro was! So many different personalities!”

This year there will be 32 burros, again all painted by different artists with different perspectives and visions. A few of these personalities already have appeared and been photographed for sneak previews. All of them will be available for viewing from Saturday, Nov. 3 until the auction on Saturday, Nov. 17.

“After the success of last year, we had an overwhelmingly positive response from other artists who wanted to get involved, wanted to paint a burro and wanted to be part of this really exciting and different kind of fund raiser,” said Warren.

“It is a way for the artists to express themselves individually,” Joan says. “It is a win-win situation for everyone – the artist, the animal shelters, the Carrizozo businesses and the individual collectors who are looking for a special kind of art sculpture that fits in very well around their home or business and reflects the heritage of the old southwest.” Burros last year were sold to businesses in Carrizozo and a number of lucky individual collectors who had the winning bids at the final auction.

Many of the burros purchased by the business community can be seen around town. One is in front of the Superior Title Company, another is in front of the Tierra Verde Real Estate Company and then there are more on Historic 12th Street that is home of Gallery 408 itself.

“We really believe in the importance of public art in a community and we couldn’t be more pleased with the real display of support that the Carrizozo businesses gave us in our first year of the event,” says Joan Malkerson.

Gallery 408 contributes all profits from the sales to the local animal shelters and veterinarians. “We were able to give checks totaling over $5,000 last year to these animal rescue centers and our goal this year is to give $10,000,” said Warren Malkerson. All of last year’s burros were sold between $950 and $3,500, “quite a bargain for so unique an art piece,” he added.

The 32 completed burros will be on sale this year at Gallery 408 on 12th Street, starting on Saturday, Nov. 3. The gallery is open every day of the week (Monday through Saturday 10 am to 5 pm; Sunday noon – 5 pm.)

The burros will be on sale through Nov. 17 when the Gallery holds the Final Sale and Auction Event. The big evening, held across the street from the Gallery, begins with doors opening at 5 pm. A free burrito dinner is served to everyone who attends.

The auction itself begins about 7 pm and lasts until the last burro is auctioned off.

Warren Malkerson is the auctioneer – adding to the fun of the event as, he notes, he is not a professional auctioneer “so everybody in the audience actually understands and can easily participate in the bidding.”

It really becomes a home-spun fun evening of entertainment, food and activity.

Each burro has its own name and the artist is responsible for writing a story about it – adding to the uniqueness of your art purchase. At about 70 pounds each with special cleats on front and rear hooves, these burros are very study and can be bolted down to any surface in or around one’s home or business.

So be sure to mark the dates down on your calendar. You won’t want to miss seeing all the burros together in all their wonderful colors with different names and different stories from different artists – it’s quite a Serenade!

For more information about the Burro Serenade, contact Gallery 408 at 505-648-2598 or email Gallery408@tularosa.net or visit their website: www.Gallery408.com
